Daily Neon: Silver Slipper Iconic Shoe – Neon-less

January 29, 2014
Silver Slipper iconic shoe

The Silver Slipper iconic shoe now resides on North Las Vegas Boulevard near Bonanza Road

The Silver Slipper sign, actually the shoe, itself does not contain any neon but 980 twinkling lights. The sign sat top the marquee in front of the Sliver Slipper Gambling Hall directly across the street from the Desert Inn on Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip).

On April 30, 1968, Howard Hughes bought the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall for $5,360,000 million.  Howard Hughes lived across the street at the Desert Inn and was paranoid that the shoe had a surveillance camera in the toe of the sign and that when it rotated it would momentarily pause when pointed at his penthouse room. Rumor has it, after buying the Sliver Slipper, he had the rotating Silver Slipper sign removed and had it fill it with concrete.

Today, the iconic Silver Slipper sits perched above Las Vegas Boulevard in the medium just north of downtown Las Vegas.
