Daily Neon: Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

November 21, 2011
Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas at the south end of the "Strip"

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas historic sign, the beginning of the famous “Strip”, Las Vegas Blvd. South. The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a Las Vegas Strip landmark funded in May 1959 and erected soon after by Western Neon. The sign was designed by Betty Willis. The sign is a 25-foot-tall and is actually not located in the city of Las Vegas but in the town of Paradise.

Willis intended to design a sign that was unique in its shape, style and content. Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) currently owns the sign, which leases it to Clark County, while the design itself is in the public domain. The design of the sign was never copyrighted since Willis considered this her gift to the city and wanted it to be in the public domain. This has resulted in the image being ubiquitous on Las Vegas souvenirs.

November 15, 2011

Las Vegas is getting a new water park.  Since the closer of Wet-n-Wild in 2004, Las Vegas with it 110+ degree weather has been water-park-less. A new joint venture with private/public ownership including the County and Howard Hughes Corporation. A new water-park is making its way to Las Vegas. Splash Canyon Water Park will be located away from the Strip and out in the suburbs on 7055 S. Fort Apache Road in the southwest part of town near the I-215.

The public/private partnership was announced November 14, 2012 by the private investment team, Clark County and The Howard Hughes Corporation representatives. In comparison, Wet-n-Wild, open in May 1985, sat on a 27 acre lot next to the Sahara Hotel on the Las Vegas “Strip” and lost it lease after 20 years. Coffee Cup: Boulder City, Nevada

November 8, 2011

Coffee Cup Cafe in Downtown Boulder City

In the small quaint town of Boulder City, Nevada located 30 miles south east of Las Vegas the is a cafe worth pulling over for called, The Coffee Cup.  The “Cup”, as the locals refer to it, has been around since Hoover Dam was being built and the town of Boulder was created. The original “The Coffee Cup” was located a few doors down from the current location on the corner of Boulder Highway and Ash Street. This was the original historical location but is now a cafe called Mel’s Diner. Down the street at the current location of the Coffee Cup, there was a place called the “Green Hut” it then changed to “Harry’s Cafe” and now is the Cup. The original neon sign was modified with the an old part of the original “Cup” sign. If you take a good look at the logo at the top sign matches the current neon at Mel’s Diner. In the Spring of 1994, “Coffee Cup” opened for business at 558 Nevada Way in the Old Town area of Boulder City, Nevada.

Diners Drive-ins Dives

Diners Drive-ins Dives

Now, in May of 2007, the Food Network’s, Guy Fieri did a feature of this eatery and showcased it on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” or Triple “D”.  Featuring the pork Chili Verde omelet, owner Al Stevens’ signature dish.  Well its been over 4 years since Guy mad his famous visit.  I needed to go out and see if it was still holding up to the hype.

Let me tell you. I order the Huevos Rancheros with the Pork Chili Verde sauce and it was delicious. Big chunks of port over crispy corn tortilla that gave it a great crunch. The hash browns were grilled to golden brown perfection.  Followed up with a never ending cup of hot coffee.  The meal was perfect and I recommend this place to everyone. The place is always busy, it’s a good sign for a restaurant, it’s a reflection of how good the food is. With a short run from Las Vegas, the Coffee Cup makes a great place to have a really good meal in a the beautiful town of Boulder City.
