The new bridge crosses a triple set of railroad tracks providing a much needed link between the Symphony Park and the rest of downtown Las Vegas. The new bridge is for pedestrians only  and connects the 3rd floor of City Hall’s parking garage to the parking lot for the Smith Center.  Lifting and setting the last section of bridge hadto be timed carefully due to the every present train traffic on the Union Pacific Railroad.

Gold Spike Casino

Gold Spike Closed its doors on April 14, 2013 in Downtown Las Vegas

Another one for the history books. The Gold Spike Hotel and Casino closed its doors this weekend. The hotel was orginally opened in 1976 as the “Rendezvous” and has been sold a few times over the years. Again it was sold in 2008 to the Siegal Group who renovated the hotel and converted the adjoining Travel Inn Motel to the “Oasis at the Gold Spike” as a 52 room boutique hotel next door. In April 2013, it was reported that the property’s debt had been acquired by Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project. Siegel then announced that it had sold the Gold Spike to the Downtown Project, the casino was closed on April 14.

UPDATE: It now open as Tony Hsieh’s new fraternity  house.

Daily Neon: Normandie Motel Sign

April 4, 2013
 Normandie Motel

The Normandie Motel Marquee neon sign

The Normandie Motel marquee and its medieval themed hatchet dates back to the 1940’s. The original motel was located on the east end of Fremont Street and was torn down during the first decade of 2000. The sign is now located on Las Vegas Blvd. just north of Fremont Street and is part of the public display from the Boneyard collection.

Another instresting fact is that this sign was designed by Betty Willis. Willis’ claim to fame is that she designed the world-famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” sign, installed in 1955 by the Young Electric Sign Company.
