Yassou Greek Grill

Article originally published on March 26, 2012, the place gets busy during lunch and there are always patrons up until closing time, It is a real food find on the west end of town.

Yassou Greek Grill Café is my favorite little Greek restaurant in Las Vegas.  This unassuming restaurant serves up some of the most delicious Greek food in town.  My favorite is their Chicken Souvlaki platter.  It is served with two skewers of savory, tender chicken and comes with a small salad, buttery, lemon rice, warm, fresh pita bread and cool and creamy Tzatziki sauce.

Yassou Greek Grill Cafe - Steak and Chicken Souvlaki Combo

Yassou Greek Grill Cafe – Steak and Chicken Souvlaki Combo

Their menu has all the standard Greek favorites such as Gyros, Spanakopita, and Dolmades. Other notable menu items are the Greek Fries served crispy and hot and drenched in garlic, spices and feta cheese. You will have garlic breath for days after eating this, but it will be well worth it. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. The one drawback is the parking lot is small and hard to navigate any vehicle larger than a Mini Cooper. Yassou Greek Grill Café is located at 7871 W. Charleston near Buffalo, their phone number is 702-798-8989 daily hours Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed on Sunday. 11 a.m- 5 p.m. on Sundays.

6/11/2016 Update: Open on Sundays and the food/quality is excellent.

On This Date:The Moulin Rouge Hotel opened on May 24, 1955

May 24, 2018
Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge Neon Sign in West Las Vegas

The Moulin Rouge Hotel opened on May 24, 1955, built at a cost of $3.5 million. It was the first integrated hotel casino in the United States. Until that time almost all of the casinos on the Strip were totally segregated—off limits to blacks unless they were the entertainment or labor force.

The hotel was located in West Las Vegas, where the black population was forced to live. West Las Vegas was bounded by Washington Avenue on the north, Bonanza Road on the south, H Street on the west, and A Street on the east. The establishment was a model of eye-catching, 110 rooms, a gorgeous showroom, swimming pool, restaurant/coffee shop, dress-shop, and bar which was constructed of highly polished and expensive hardwoods. When it opened, the Moulin Rouge was fully integrated top to bottom, from employees to patrons to entertainers.

The hotel made the June 20, 1955, cover of Life magazine, with a photo of two showgirls. A veritable “A” list of performers regularly showed to party until dawn. Great black singers and musicians such as Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, and Count Basie would perform often. These artists were banned from gambling or staying at the hotels on the Strip.[1] In addition, white performers, including George Burns, Jeanette MacDonald, Tallulah Bankhead, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Frankie Laine, Maurice Chevalier, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Jack Benny, Sophie Tucker and Frank Sinatra, would drop in after their shows to gamble and perform. Eventually management added a 2:30am “Third Show” to accommodate the crowds.

In November 1955 the Moulin Rouge closed its doors, and by December 1955, the casino had declared bankruptcy. Nevertheless, to maintain its gaming license, the Moulin Rouge (like many closed properties) operates on a temporary basis for a state-mandated minimum of eight hours every two years, most recently on June 19, 2012.

On May 29, 2003, a fire ripped through the buildings, almost entirely gutting the complex.

After 2003 fire, what was left of abandoned hotel, burned down on May 6, 2009.

Undead in Las Vegas: Zombie Activities and Attractions

February 8, 2018

Zombie Activities and AttractionsWhen you think of Las Vegas, you think of glitz and glamour – you think of somewhere high rollers and celebrities flock to for a weekend of indulgence and excitement. You don’t normally think of flesh-eating zombies. But the ties between the living dead and living it large actually run fairly deep. There’s a whole host of zombie themed activities in Las Vegas, and the ties between the city of lights and zombies continue into popular culture. Let’s explore!

Adventure Combat Ops

There are a fair few zombie themed activities in Las Vegas, including the Adventure Combat Ops, which allows players to dress up as special ops and form the last line of defense against a marauding zombie army. The simulation recreates a post-apocalyptic city and advertises itself as a completely immersive experience. Players are transported into a world of the near future, where zombies have wiped out most of civilisation. The game also serves as a life lesson as to how the special ops might operate, with state of the art equipment used and information provided on tactical manoeuvres. Not only that, for those who are bitten by the zombies, shallow graves are promised off the beaten path in the desert – they’re kidding of course, but that only amps up the excitement.

The Zombie Vegas Connection

In fact, the tradition of zombies and Vegas isn’t a new one. The sandbox zombie game developed by Blue Castle Games, Dead Rising 2 is set in Las Vegas. Protagonist Chuck becomes stuck in a series of malls that make up the entertainment complex in the 2010 Xbox 360 game, and his trips to various casinos are an integral part of collecting anti-zombie medication and defeating villains. Moreover, the Betway Lost Vegas online slot carries on the tradition, with the slots themed around an outbreak taking place in Vegas. Even films have capitalised on the juxtaposition of the city of Las Vegas and the zombie outbreak, with the 2016 film It Stains the Sand Red, distributed by Dark Sky Films, focusing on a zombie apocalypse occurring in the desert around Vegas. The film received a 58% score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Fear the Walking Dead

The AMC sponsored Fear the Walking Dead Survival Attraction, which is part of the Vegas Experience also allows aspiring zombie slayers out into a post-apocalyptic zombie world. This time, as part of a multisensory experience, players are locked in an escape room as a 4D “thrill attraction”. The game then opens up to be both part of a maze, and part of an interactive video game experience. The attraction takes the immersive and scary aspects of the AMC show and combines them with a skills based multiplayer game and a live skills based game. The attraction takes the core theme of escaping zombies in the near future and uses both physical and digital means to create an atmospheric experience.

Escape or Die

Escape room game Escape or Die also continues the theme, with even signing up to the marketing and connecting on social media embracing the post-apocalyptic theme. Located just off the illustrious and renowned Las Vegas Strip, the game features three levels of scariness and difficulty: The Next Civilisation, Zombie Takeover, and Biohazard. Each adventure lasts one hour and tickets range between $35-$40, with regular sales promotions offering $10 off, allowing the zombie apocalypse to be avoided at a reduced rate.

Zombie Burlesque

For something slightly different, yet in keeping with the zombies in Vegas theme, Zombie Burlesque offers the immersive zombie experience but without the fear factor that the other events and activities promise. The comedy musical, from the brains of the people who created Vegas! The Show, crosses zombies with the circus, with traditional burlesque for an entertaining show. Vegas is known for its high energy performances and Zombie Burlesque allows zombie fans to indulge in the living dead without having to leave their seats.

Las Vegas is a city of many talents, from hosting world class performers with Vegas residencies, to attracting clientele from across the world to sample the lifestyle that the city has to offer. The zombie connection is just another layer in the multi-faceted city of Las Vegas. With so many ways to indulge your passion for zombies in Vegas, it really is the perfect weekend destination.

Ten Wild Facts about Las Vegas which Blow Your Mind

November 14, 2017

Las Vegas, also renowned as Sin City, is best known as the gaming capital of the world. Being home to thousands of casinos that offer a wide assortment of thrills, Las Vegas is nothing short of a party destination. The city has been used as an inspiration for most online gambling destinations and the bonuses they offer, including the Bet365 casino bonus. Even though it is well known for gambling, not many people known much about the city of Las Vegas. Here are some mind-blowing facts about this flashy city that you probably didn’t know:

1. Public drinking

Some places may allow residents to walk around with drinks in their hands including Las Vegas, but the city has some strict laws on how to go about it. You are only allowed to have an open drink in public if the place where you made the purchase permitted you to leave with it. Additionally, glass and metal containers are not allowed, and one can only use a plastic container. With a drink in hand, you cannot go within one thousand feet of learning, medical, or religious institution. These drinking regulations are only upheld within the city limits.

2. Legendary Crime Lords
It is no secret that the city was built to its current gaming status by notorious mobsters. The mobster era was especially rampant between 1905 and 1910 when the law restricted gambling. The ban did not stop gambling activities, which were being undertaken underground. During this time until the ban was lifted in 1910, law enforcement engaged them in a great war, which went down in history as among the most gruesome mobster wars of our time. Even though gambling was legalized, the lottery remained banned even to date. Efforts to overturn this ban have proved futile.

You can learn more about this war in the Mob Museum located in the same city. It is filled with artifacts that were preserved from those days, and the staff tell stories of how the Las Vegas came under the influence of some of the biggest crime lords.

3. Numerous accommodation facilities
Apart from a lot of gambling establishments, Las Vegas boasts among the highest accommodation facilities, which amount to a total of one hundred and thirty thousand hotel rooms. The MGM Grand Casino has the most accommodation rooms, amounting to five thousand of them. The number of rooms available in Las Vegas are way more than those available in the entire State of Oregon, and it would take one person about two hundred and eighty-eight years to spend a night in each of them. These accommodation establishments are almost always over ninety percent full, which goes to show that the population of Las Vegas demands such a high amount of rooms.

4.  Gambling is within the city limits only

Las Vegas is most popular for its gambling activities, with casino games being found in nearly every nook and cranny. However, gambling is only allowed within forty kilometers of the famous Las Vegas Strip. Past the twenty-five-mile limit, one will be welcomed by the quieter side of Las Vegas. This law was enacted in 1931 during the construction of the Hoover Dam. The officials overseeing the construction were worried that the workers, who lived in a town just outside the city, would take all their wages to the casino tables and slots. Even with many evolvements happening in the small town, the authorities have still maintained the restriction.

5.  MGM Casino inferno
With the numerous guests that go in and out of casino establishments in Las Vegas, installing equipment to control infernos is fundamental. However, during the establishment of brick and mortar casinos up to the 1980s, most gambling destinations did not have some of the fire safety measures that are considered crucial today. The MGM Casino fell victim to an inferno in the ground floor, which happened to be one of the two floors which lacked water sprinklers. This led to a huge fire that saw the death of eighty-five people, and six hundred and seventy-nine being injured. This incident went down as one of the worst fire cases in the United States.

6. Gambling hospitals

Even though Las Vegas is well known for the thrill of gambling, one hospital took it too far, and workers began placing wagers on when their patient would pass on. These workers were stripped of their licenses, while one nurse faced murder for apparently killing one of her patients to win a wager. There have since been strict rules on where gambling can be undertaken in the city.

7.  Prostitution is banned

Being dubbed Sin City may lead most people into believing that it allows legal prostitution. The law in Nevada states that such activities are only allowed in states that feature the inhabitants not being less than four hundred thousand people. Seeing that Las Vegas has surpassed that mark by far, the practice is banned by the state. However, this does not mean that underground rings do not conduct the business.

8.  Las Vegas was among the most racially segregated states in the 1950s

During the legalization of gambling, African-Americans were not restricted from gambling at casinos. However, in the 1950s, tourists complained about the interaction of races, which led to the banning of African-Americans from gambling and living on a certain side of town. These laws were lifted in 1960.

9. Vegas saved FedEx
The Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the FedEx Company decided to dance with lady luck to save his company, which was facing bankruptcy and probable closure. He wagered the firm’s last five thousand dollars during a blackjack game. This saw him win twenty-seven thousand dollars, which helped him pay off the company’s debts.

10.  Hosts the brightest place on Earth
With about fifteen thousand miles of neon lights running through the strip, which is more than what most states have, it is no wonder the Las Vegas Strip is the brightest place on the globe when observed from space.

Las Vegas has much more exciting facts to it other than being the gambling capital as seen in this review.
