Create Gourmet Burgers – Closing Their Doors March 25, 2012

Create Burger Closing it Doors after 4 years on March 25, 2012

Bad news burger lovers…Summerlin is losing a good burger joint. After 4 years of delicious build-your-own burgers Create Gourmet Burgers & Frozen Custard will be closing their doors on March 25, 2012.  It’s hard to imagine why this popular restaurant is going under.  I was just there the other night and there were easily 20+ people in the place. I enjoyed my last “Modernist” burger and was saddened by the thought that this original burger joint will be no more.

Plans of Opening Splash Canyon this Summer Down the Drain

Las Vegans will have to wait another year before they can once again enjoy a water theme park close to home.  Splash Canyon, the much anticipated water theme park, will not be opening in May of 2012 as originally planned, according to a Splash Canyon executive. Red tape caused a delay in getting construction started on the $18-million park. Splash Canyon is located at Fort Apache and Warm Springs roads and plans call for a 25-acre park with a 15-acre expansion planned for the future, bringing the total size to 40 acres. Sales were already underway for season tickets this year at the introductory rate of $99 per person. As of this afternoon, the Splash Canyon website has been taken offline.

Another developer is planning a 22-acre water park for Henderson near Gibson and Galleria roads.  Vegas Residential LLC is still securing financing for the proposed project.

The last water theme park operating in Las Vegas was Wet and Wild.  Located on Las Vegas Blvd. near Sahara Avenue.  That park closed when it’s lease expired in 2004. Landowners were to build a mega-resort there but that project never got off the ground.

Wahoo’s Fish Tacos Opening Second Location in Summerlin’s Boca Park

Wahoo's Fish Tacos on Sunset & Rainbow in Las Vegas, Nevada

I just discovered that Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, imported from Orange County, Califorina has their first restaurant in Las Vegas.  Wahoo’s is famous for its delicious So Cal, beach taco stand food.  This location, open since October 2011, is at a kind of out-of-the-way location on Sunset near Rainbow Blvd.  From the outside, it looks like a bar that might serve up some food from a small kitchen, typically found in Las Vegas.  Once you get inside its main focus is the food, and they happen to have a bar inside as well.  The main restaurant is spacious and has plenty of seating, styled in southern California beach/surfing & snowboard/skateboarding motif.  Deep in the center of the restaurant is a full bar separated with glass partitions, but the restaurant is very family oriented. Wahoo’s is open 24/7.

Wahoo's 2 taco combo platter for $6.50 rice and beans included.

I first tried out Wahoo’s a few years back after spending the day at Pacific Beach in San Diego.  I brought the whole family in fresh from the beach, sandy feet and in flip-flops and I felt right at home.  At the Wahoo’s in Las Vegas, I ordered  the two taco combo plate, 1 grilled fish taco, and the other, carne asada, served with rice and beans.  I stuck with the Cajun bean and brown rice (pictured above) for $6.50 this tasty deal is a quite the value.

Coming Soon to Summerlin's Boca Park.

Now for the best news, according to the owner, Wahoo’s is opening up its second location in Summerlin’s Boca Park right behind the existing Jason’s Deli and is expected to open near the end of  this February (2012).  This location will include an outside patio.  Also, there are plans for a Hendertucky (Green Valley) store opening too.

Location: 7020 W. Sunset Rd Las Vegas, Nevada (702) 399.1665

Nothing Bundt Cakes a Las Vegas Original

August 31, 2011

Ask almost any Las Vegan the best place to get a cake for any occasion and they will most likely tell you to go to Nothing Bundt Cakes.  This delicious bakery, which is now a franchised brand, started in the late 1990s by two local women who were best friends and loved to bake.  They spent months perfecting their recipe and Nothing Bundt Cakes was created. It is a Las Vegas original.

If given a choice to select only one dessert, I have to admit, cake would be near the bottom of my list, but this isn’t just cake.  It’s more like a muffin or pound cake or banana bread. It’s moist, full of flavor and their cream cheese frosting makes it sinfully sweet and addictive.

Nothing Bundt Cakes has come a long way from it’s humble beginnings in the kitchen of founders Dena Tripp and Debra Shwetz.  When they moved out of their kitchen they set up shop in a small, narrow store on West Sahara.  This store was so small it was more like a bakery counter and there were no frills, just great cakes.  Since it has become a franchise, the store looks like a Hallmark store.  They moved into a large boutique location just down the street from their original store, they are now located at 8320 W. Sahara Ave #140 with an additional location at 9711 S. Eastern Avenue.  Some of the flavors of cakes they have available are Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Lemon, White Chocolate Raspberry, Cinnamon Swirl, Marble, Red Velvet with Chocolate Chips, Carrot, and White White Chocolate. You can pick up more than just bundt cakes there they have everything from small gifts to baby clothes, aprons, cards and other small items.

Nothing Bundt Cakes now come in several sizes from the original 8 and 10 inch diameter cakes to a single serve bundt and the bundtinis (bite size bundts sold by the dozen).  Each cake can be personalized for any occasion you can imagine with decorative ribbons, flowers and whimsical cards.  They also provide cakes as corporate gifts.  The next occasion that calls for cake be sure to give Nothing Bundt Cakes a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Lee’s Sandwiches

July 13, 2011

Lee’s Sandwiches is known for serving traditional banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) as well as European style sandwiches on their fresh baguettes and croissants made fresh daily in their restaurant.  They also serve an abundant assortment of various types of drinks, smoothies, coffees and desserts.

The restaurant is modern, bright and clean.  There are a few inconveniences such as they only accept cash so you cannot use your debit card.  However, they do have an ATM available.  Also, their drinks have no refills and the largest size is about the size of small Carl’s Jr. cup and costs $2.29  And although the bread they use is made fresh it has a chewy crust that can give your jaw a workout.

If you want to try a banh mi sandwich try the #5 , it is the grilled pork and it is delicious. A mixture of marinated grill pork, fresh vegetables, including a little cilantro and some sliced jalapeno for a splash of heat. All this for a low price of $2.99.

Lee’s Sandwiches is located at:
3989 Spring Mountain Road (702) 331-9999
Near Valley View Drive
Open 24/7
