Yassou Greek Grill

Article originally published on March 26, 2012, the place gets busy during lunch and there are always patrons up until closing time, It is a real food find on the west end of town.

Yassou Greek Grill Café is my favorite little Greek restaurant in Las Vegas.  This unassuming restaurant serves up some of the most delicious Greek food in town.  My favorite is their Chicken Souvlaki platter.  It is served with two skewers of savory, tender chicken and comes with a small salad, buttery, lemon rice, warm, fresh pita bread and cool and creamy Tzatziki sauce.

Their menu has all the standard Greek favorites such as Gyros, Spanakopita, and Dolmades. Other notable menu items are the Greek Fries served crispy and hot and drenched in garlic, spices and feta cheese. You will have garlic breath for days after eating this, but it will be well worth it. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. The one drawback is the parking lot is small and hard to navigate any vehicle larger than a Mini Cooper. Yassou Greek Grill Café is located at 7871 W. Charleston near Buffalo, their phone number is 702-798-8989 daily hours Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed on Sunday. 11 a.m- 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The Wicked Spoon is home to one of the most incredible buffet spreads in the city, where you can find anything from Korean style squid to Coulotte steaks. They take the concept of cafeteria style buffets and elevate it to a classier level.

The décor makes the restaurant just as lavish the casino floor, and the prices depending on the time of day are reasonable. For between $28 and $49 you can eat as much gourmet steaks as you want. If you’re gambling just for fun and want to get a little festive, for an extra $15 you can have bottomless drinks, and that includes beer, mimosas, wine and more.

Unlike the Wicked Spoon’s bizarre menu that happens to include delicacies like dormice dating back to Ancient Rome, the Bacchanal’s menu does offer a staggering 500 mouthwatering dishes ranging across many niches both global and regional. From Atlantic and Pacific oysters to exquisite Chinese food, there’s little missing from their extravagant range of options.

Dubbed by Thrillist as “the standard against which all Las Vegas buffets are judged”, for between $40 and $60 you can book yourself a table. Once again for $15 you can get yourself bottomless drinks (excluding hard liquors), but depending on whether you plan on hitting the tables later or not that may not be the best idea.

The Bellagio in another one of the most famous casinos in Vegas that is also known for its award-winning buffet table. In addition to exquisite takes on home cooking, you can fill your plate with crab, oysters, lamb chops, dim sum or any of the 15 chef specialties that are made fresh every single day.

While the restaurant is usually packed, as the Bellagio is one of the hottest gambling spots in Vegas, single diners and couples have the option to skip the long line if there are any free seats at the bar. While it may not be idea, it is well worth a chance to get a taste of the multitude of dishes available. It is, however, a little on the pricier side ranging for about $40 to $58 per person.

The lavish dining experience offered at Wynn Casino’s buffet is something out of a fairy tale. The bouquet’s and ceiling fixtures combine fantasy with elegance, and with over 120 dishes including prime cuts of grilled steak and oceanic delights, there’s little missing from this elaborate feast.

Priced between $30 and $60 per person depending on the time of day, one of the biggest perks of the buffet is access to one of the best dessert buffets in the city. With plenty of warm pastries and even a chocolate fountain you won’t want to miss out on dessert.

Now, basically all of them served their gyros with a similar type of meat. The kind that looks like a large piece of wood being loaded a vertical wood lathe. This big-o-cylinder of meat is broiled and sliced off and served. The meat spool is usually a mix of beef, lamb and spices or most commonly, beef. It seems to me that they all go and shop at the same store for this mega roll of meat to cook. The meat usually has the same texture and similar taste wherever I go. I do have to mention that some places serve gyros a lot better than others.

Being as I work in the downtown area of Las Vegas, I am always on the hunt for a new place to eat for lunch. I found this hole-in-the wall on East Fremont Street nestled between a tattoo parlor and a small pizza joint, called Kabob Korner about 3 years ago. Located at 507 East Fremont Street, it’s not really on the corner, but its better than calling it “Kabob in the middle of the block where it is jammed between tats-r-us and the pizza place”. The front of this place is nothing to look at. It has some outdated posters of food and a woman with big hair and the word GYRO on it. Most people would just walk by without notice. Once inside the narrow (15 feet wide) shop, with its middle eastern decor, there are 6 tables, not a lot of room so be prepared to share your table with a stranger. Go ahead, go in, it’s ok. The place is small, but it seems to be frequent by a lot of downtown workers types, you got: cops, courthouse workers, law people, county and city workers and not a lot of tourists. Throw a few in a few street people every once in a while and you get the picture. Kabob Korner is the only Halal restaurant in Las Vegas. Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines.

Now for the food part. My favorite thing on the menu is the Super Gyro ($5.99) not to be confused their standard gyro. The super gyro is made from all lamb (yes, as in Mary), the standard gyro is a mixture of beef and lamb. Now, I never had lamb before as a stand alone dish, but the super gyro is delicious and juicy, it is very flavorful and melts in you mouth and it is quite big. The super gyro combo with fries and drink, this is my standard order here. The man sized, gyro comes with onions, tomatoes and their tzatziki sauce, topped with large helping of feta, served on a fluffy sweet pita bread, along with a generous portion of thick seasoned fries. I am sure this is not the most healthy thing to eat, but it is nice to give yourself a treat from time to time. I have tried the chicken dishes which are really good and the rice and pita bread is very tasty too. My only complaint is the drink situation. They only serve drinks in cans or bottles. This is clearly not enough liquid to go with your super gyro scarf-down. I asked the owner about the drinks and he told me that if there was a soda fountain in there, the street people would be coming in and trying to get refills. Well, maybe with the new changes going on in this part of East Fremont Street, they will upgrade (please!)

The only tricky part of downtown eating is parking, for lunch at the Kabob Korner you can usually get a metered parking spot on the southern side of Fremont on 6th Street, an hour will cost about a dollar, bring coins. The store is open Monday-Saturday 10am-11pm and closed on Sunday. Kabob Korner serves up some yummy middle eastern eats in their 15 foot wide kabob shop in downtown. So when you your really hungry swing by and check out Kabob Korner (which is not on the corner).

Update: May 2, 2015: This restaurant has moved to 730 E Flamingo Rd #7 and is no longer in Downtown Las Vegas and LasVegas360 has not reviewed it at its new location.

The long gone Alpine Village Inn was located at 3003 Paradise Road, across the street from the Las Vegas Hilton. This famous place began serving German food in a downtown location in 1950, then moved four times before settling into its final location on Paradise, in 1970.

The main 250-seat dining room was looked like of a Bavarian village, with wrought-iron grill-work, sloping roofs, the male staff workers all wore lederhosen and the waitresses wore long skirts like the ones on a St. Pauli Girl beer bottle. The atmosphere was always festive.. The underground Rathskeller, my favorite, was a bar and sandwich shop under the main restaurant, with peanuts on the floor. Guest were encouraged to sing along with the piano player where you would attempt to learn German by singing the Schnitzelbank song, the board pictured below is owned by Las Vegas’ own Lonnie Hammargren.

The chalet-style peaked-roof architecture, along with big-game trophies, Swiss clocks, decorative horns and copper bells, and an extensive miniature train set all made Alpine Village a Las Vegas landmark for 27 years. The Alpine Village Inn closed its doors in March 1997.

One of the most memorable items of the Alpine Village Inn was their famous chicken soup and the seasoned cottage cheese. The soup was always served piping hot in heavy pewter bowls and the cottage cheese were served with mini loafs of pumpernickel bread.

CHICKEN SUPREME SOUP

2 quarts water
2 teaspoons celery salt
2 teaspoons Accent
1 pound ground chicken (cooked)
1 medium onion, ground
Yellow food coloring (optional)
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon
2 to 3 carrots (ground)

Roux:
1/2 cup oil
1 cup flour

Cook
Boiling the soup ingredients for 30 minutes.

 Cool
Removed the pot from the heat and allowed to cool slightly.

Blend
Ladled the mixture into a blender, about 2 to 3 cups at a time, and blended until almost smooth. Be careful during this process, hot soup in a blender can shoot everywhere even with a lid on. The blender process gives the soup a creamier texture as was served at  the Alpine Village Inn.

Thicken
To prepare the roux, heat oil add flour slowly and stir with a wire whisk. It should be the consistency of mashed potatoes. Don’t burn the roux.

Poured the blended mixture back into a large pot and add the cooked roux and continued to cook until the soup thickened.

Note: when adding the roux to the soup, use small amounts as the roux is a thickener and watch the consistency (you may not need it all- try not to over thicken) you want it to look like a thick gravy.

SEASONED COTTAGE CHEESE

2 pounds cottage cheese, small curd
1/2 teaspoon caraway
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon Accent
1/2 teaspoons white pepper
1 tablespoon dried chives
1/2 teaspoon celery salt

Mix all ingredients together and chill for several hours or overnight. Serve as a condiment or as a dip.

Modified In-N-Out Burger Bumper Sticker from the 80’s

At the time Las Vegas had about 250,000 people in the whole valley and was a much smaller place than it is now, and there was no In-N-Out Burger to speak of. I still had relatives who lived in the Rosemead, Temple City and Arcadia area, who I would visit from time to time and of course I would visit my favorite burger stop, In-N-Out. Las Vegas was going rapidly, and new people were moving here from all parts of the country and most of them never heard of In-N-Out. I would tell people to go visit one if you were heading to Southern California. A few times a year my parents would go back to the old neighborhood to visit relatives. During one of these visits my older cousin, who lived in Rosemead, told me about In-N-Out’s “Animal Style” burger. I was the only one who knew of this secret menu item when ordering a Double-Double. Most people did not even believe that you could order something that was not on the menu.

By the time I started driving, in 1982, I had a 1971 primer grey Toyota mini pick-up truck with the modified In-N-Out Burger bumper sticker affixed to it. In-N-Out had many meanings. I remember seeing a knock-off one that said. “In-n-out in-n-out, that’s what the urge is all about.” My friends and I always wished there was one close enough to visit. It wasn’t until 1983-1984, when I was in high school an In-N-Out opened in Hesperia, California. near Victorville on the Interstate 15. Some of my close friends never had been to In-N-Out and were interested in trying them out. My friends and I would make the “Dash” or “Road Trip” to In-N-Out, and it was no small under taking. From Las Vegas, this was a 200 mile sprint one way, over 400 miles round trip. When we got there, we would load up our stomachs with as much as we could eat, totally stuffing ourselves ’til it hurt. We would get a few new In-N-Out T-shirts, and a stack of bumpers stickers to bring back to our friends. It was a long haul, and bringing burgers back home was kinda of fruitless, they got too cold and soggy on the drive, but we tried. The next day we would brag to our other friends about the past day’s road trip, wearing our new T-shirts and handing out a few bumper stickers as proof.

Fast forward to 1992, I was still in college when In-N-Out opened its first non-Southern California restaurant in Las Vegas across from UNLV. Man, I was happy about that. It took a while for the burger to make its migration east, but they finally made it here. They still had the same taste I remember when I was young, but by now, the bumper stickers are all gone.

Even today, with friends online and spread across the country, when we get on the topic of best burgers, In-N-Out always comes up as a place to go. You know the term, “I was going there before you were born”, well it is true for me to say to most folks. But, to put things in perspective, my parents, went to In-N-Out, way back when they had one store in Baldwin Park the day they got married. That was back in 1954. Today in Las Vegas, I now have an In-N-Out Burger within a mile of my home, and the family and I make the “Dash” (1-mile) almost on a weekly basis. In-N-Out has always had great quality food. Like the slogan says, “Quality you can taste.”  and I have enjoyed it for my entire life. I hope when my boys grow up that there is an In-N-Out burger near them to share with their families.

Big long lines, lots of trucks and weather too hot for April as the crowds packed the festival. I could not believe that people where waiting for 3-5  hours to trying to get some a few White Castle burgers when there was other great options available.
