Treasure Island Hotel and Casino now called “TI”

Treasure Island was opened by Mirage Resorts on October 27, 1993 under the direction of Steve Wynn at a cost of $450 million. The resort was originally going to be a tower expansion for the Mirage, but become its own resort. The property sits at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd (the Strip) and Spring Mountain Road. The resort is home to Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère. When opened in 1993. Originally, Treasure Island had a free “Buccaneer Bay” show in a large man-made lake fronting the resort. The show included 2 boats, one in dock and another,a pirate ship, which sailed into port to rain mayhem, but ultimately is sunk at the last cannon shot. In 2003, the show was replaced the Sirens’ Cove featuring the Sirens of TI which removed the sailing pirate ship to make was for new mall space and also become more adult orientated. The Sirens’ Cove was closed on October 21, 2013.

On December 15, 2008, MGM Mirage was sold for $775 million to Phil Ruffin, former owner of the New Frontier Hotel and Casino.

The Bellagio resort open on October 15, 1998. the resort was conceived by Steve Wynn. Located on the old Dunes hotel and golf course on the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Flamingo Road.  The main tower of Bellagio is 36 floors tall, has 3015 rooms. The Spa Tower, which stands to the south of the main tower, is 33 floors and contains 935 rooms.  The Bellagio’s famous attractions include: Bellagio Gallery Of Fine Art, Bellagio Conservatory, the Fountains of Bellagio and Cirque du Soleil’s aquatic production called “O”.

In 2001, The hotel was featured in the movie Ocean’s 11 starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Andy García, and Julia Roberts.

Wynn sold Mirage Resorts to MGM Grand in 2000, resulting in the formation of MGM Mirage.

Evel Knievel failed attempt to jump the fountains at Caesars Place on December 31, 1967

On December 31, 1967, Daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump over the water fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Knievel’s jump was a 141 foot attempt and his longest to-date.  When he hit the takeoff ramp, he felt the motorcycle unexpectedly decelerate. The sudden loss of power on the takeoff caused Knievel to come up short and land on the safety ramp which was supported by a van. This caused the handlebars to be ripped out of his hands as he tumbled over them onto the pavement where he skidded into the Dunes parking lot. As a result of the crash, Knievel suffered a crushed pelvis and femur, fractures to his hip, wrist, and both ankles and a concussion that kept him in the hospital for a month in a reported coma for 29 days.

The Caesars Palace crash was Knievel’s longest attempted motorcycle jump at 141 feet. After his crash and recovery, Knievel was more famous than ever. ABC-TV bought the rights to the film of the jump; paying far more than they originally would have had they televised the original jump live. Ironically, when Knievel finally achieved the fame he had always wanted, and fortune now a distinct possibility, his doctors were telling him that he might never walk without the aid of crutches, let alone ride and jump motorcycles again.

On September 15, 1980, Gary Wells gained much media coverage, and much physical suffering, when he unsuccessfully tried to jump a motorcycle over the water fountains at the Caesars Palace. He sustained injuries to many different parts of his body.

April 14, 1989, Robbie Knievel, Evel’s son, successfully completed what his father could not do years before by completing the fountain jump.

On May 4, 2006, Mike ‘The Godfather’ Metzger jumped the Caesars Palace’s fountains that included a back flip.
